Tre returns to defend sprint titles
Bermuda’s top sprinter Tre Houston will return the Island for this weekend’s National Championships to defend his 100 and 200 metre titles. The 21-year-old UK-based runner beat off his main challenger, Jeneko Place, to claim his twin victories at the National Sports Centre (NSC) at last year’s Championships.Houston posted times of 10.96 seconds in the 100m and 21.24 in the 200m.And he is confident of reaffirming his status as Bermuda fastest man when he competes in the sprint events at the NSC this weekend.“I’ll be coming home to run in Bermuda for the National Championships ... I know I’m in the best shape to run fast,” said Houston. He has sets his sights on representing Bermuda at the IAAF World Championships in South Korea this summer, and the Pan-Am Games in Mexico in October.Since recovering from a bout of food poisoning that prevented him from competing at a recent meet in Geneva, Houston has been running in the British Leagues for Sheffield and competed in Cardiff at the weekend. He said: “I actually went abroad to compete in Geneva, Switzerland, and was ready to run fast but things didn’t go my way because I got food poisoning,” said Houston, who hopes to avoid a recurrence of the hamstring problems that blighted his previous campaign.“The main target and focus for this season is the World Championships. Once I do qualify for Worlds I will automatically be in the Pan-Am Games. It’s not going to be a easy task but I’m willing to take my body to that level which will require a lot of hard work and dedication.”Houston represent the Island at the Commonwealth Games in India last year where he achieved a personal best in the quarter-finals of the 100m with a time of 10.45 seconds, and reached the semi-finals of the 200m.n Long jumper Tyrone Smith finished fourth at the Prefontaine Classic Track Meet in Eugene, Oregon, at the weekend.Smith, Bermuda’s Male Athlete of the Year, recorded his best leap of eight metres on his second attempt.Last week Smith won the long jump at the 13th Internationals Leichtathletik track meet in Dessau, Germany, with a leap of 7.88m.He also finished first at last month’s Kawasaki World Challenge Meet, in Japan, with a jump of 8.09m.
