National titles up for grabs
Overseas athletes Shianne Smith, Tre Houston and Dage Minors are among the top performers competing in the Bermuda Track and Field National Championships.More than 160 local athletes will descend on the National Sports Centre tomorrow and Sunday to determine who becomes the national champion at each respective event.Donna Watson, president of the Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA), said several of the Island’s athletes hoping to qualify for this year’s Pan Am Games and World Championships would be on show.“We have some of our overseas athletes who will be coming home for the event like Tre Houston (sprint), Shianne Smith (heptathlon) and Dage Minors (3,000 metres),” she said.“We are looking for this to be a great event as we have several athletes who are trying to meet standards and preparing for international events.“We will have athletes who have just been selected for the CAC Age Group event, the Island Games competitors, World Youth Championship athletes and those trying to qualify for CAC Seniors, World Championships, Pan Am Games and Pan Am Juniors.“We have over 160 athletes who have signed up for this event and there should be some good competition. We will be highlighting our Carifta athletes, especially our medallists.”For the first time the National Championships will feature a 10K road race. Sean Trott, who came third in the May 24 Half-Marathon Derby is among the favourites.Watson added: “We are hoping to put on a 10K if we get enough participants.“The BTFA are looking to combine track and road running as they both fall under our umbrella. We recognise it’s close to the Bermuda Day Half-Marathon but this could be a nice fun run for the athletes.”The championships begin at 5.30pm tomorrow, and at 5pm on Saturday.Bermuda have selected their CAC Age Group team to compete in the Tortola, British Virgin Islands, from July 1-2.Watson said Bermuda’s squad of eight athletes had been forced to broaden their skills, as the CACs were a multi-event competition.“The last time Bermuda competed in this event Jordan Bascome won the 13-14 girls age group and Bermuda placed fourth overall,” said Watson.“This is a very strong team and I expect them to do very well at this event.”Bermuda’s CAC Age Group team:11-12 Girls Anasia Barclay, Demiqua Daniels11-12 Boys Aaron Jacobs, Elisha Darrell13-14 Girls Jordan Bascome, Azaire Smith13-14 Boys Tez Terry, Daiquin ArorashTeam Manger/Coach- Jarita Vickes (Dill) and Paul Simons
