Place pulls off surprise win over Houston

Bermuda sprinter Jeneko Place pulled off a surprise win in the National Track and Field Championships 200 metres by defeating defending titleholder Tre Houston.Place, 17, who also won the 100 metres in 10.94 seconds, pipped Houston to the finish line in a time of 21.87 in the much anticipated 200m contest held at the National Sports Centre over the weekend.UK-based Houston, 21, who is struggling to shake off an abdominal injury, recorded a time of 22.2.Both runners have a busy summer ahead with Place preparing for the World Youth Championships in Lille, France, and Houston hoping to qualify for the World Championships in South Korea.In the inaugural 10K run on Saturday, youngster Sean Trott, who placed third in the May 24 Marathon Derby, won in a time of 35.03, while Deon Breary, the May 24 female winner, was the first woman to cross the line in 44.54.Donna Watson, Bermuda Track and Field Association president, said although the 10K race wasn’t as well attended as hoped, she believed it be a “great addition” to the Championships in future years.“This was a well attended event and there were some phenomenal performances by our athletes,” she said.“The is first time we have incorporated a 10K road race and it was not as well attended as we would like but it added a great addition to the championships and I’m sure it will continue to grow.“We had athletes who performed personal bests and qualified for some of the international events. We had over 160 athletes compete and 41 in in the 10K.”Other notable performances saw promising youngster Kyrah Scaders win the 400, 800 and 1,500 m in the under-14 category, while Shaquille Dill claimed victory in under-129 400 and 800m.Returning home for the Championships, Shianne Smith broke the national record in the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.79. She also won the 400m, heptathlon and set a new personal best in the shot put.Also in the heptathlon, Andrea Jackson reached the qualifying standard for the CAC Senior Championships with 4609 points.
