By Derek deChabertBermuda middle distance runner Aaron Evans returned to winning ways by claiming gold in the 800 metres at the Auburn Invitational at the weekend.The Olympic hopeful. who missed part of last season due to injury, finished in a time of one minute 52.29 seconds.Henry Stevens-Carty and Allison Outerbridge, both competing at the same meet, also put in good performances.Carty, coming off of an injury, placed 14th overall in a time of 1:56.60 in the 800m.Outerbridge, competing in the triple jump, came 9th overall with a leap of 11.80 metres.The Island’s top long jumper Tyrone Smith also had an encouraging weekend, winning his event at the MSSU Invitational with a leap of 7.73m.At the Bronco Invitational, Arantxa King finished runner up in the long jump with a leap of 6.22m,Dage Minors continued his winning ways from the KPMG Front Street Mile and his preparation towards Carifta by winning the 100m and breaking his school’s record.Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson was full of praise for the recent performances of some of the Island’s top performers.“The BTFA have had a very busy weekend locally and overseas but have had some good results, with all of the overseas events are Indoor track meets,” she said.“Of course Aaron’s goal for this year is to qualify for the Olympics and I have no doubt that he will reach this goal of 1:46.30 which Aaron has run but not in the qualifying period.“Arantxa’s goal for this year is meeting the qualifying standard for the London Olympics. If Arantxa can continue to jump consistently in the six metre plus area she should have no problem reaching her goal of 6.65.“Tyrone is hoping to be jumping consistently over 8 m heading towards the World Indoor Championships. “Locally, there were few athletes who reached the Carifta Games qualifying standard at the National Sports Centre.Chas Smith, competing in the Under-20 boys high jump, leaped 1.90m to book his place in the upcoming games, while Quinnae Outerbridge (5:15.45) made the grade in the Under-17 girls 1500m.“We also had an excellent turn out for the Officials training which is taking place all week and being facilitated by Esther Maynard from Barbados,” added Watson.
