Dage Minors set a new school record in the 800 metres during a successful weekend for Bermuda’s overseas track and field athletes.Competing for St Johnsbury School in the Essex Invitational meet in Vermont, Minors finished in a time of one minute, 55.44 seconds, beating the previous record of 1:57.He also helped his school’s 4X400 metres relay team win gold.Aaron Evans continued his rich vein of form, winning the East Regional championships 800 metres in 1.47.31 to qualify for next month’s NCAA Championships.Arantxa King finished third in the long lump with a leap of 6.55 metres as she inches closer to the Olympic standard of 6.65.She also placed ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.82, qualifying in both events for NCAA Championships.Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson praised the performances of the Island’s athletes.“Each time Aaron runs he is creeping closer to the Olympic qualifying standard of 1:46.30,” she said.“There is no doubt that he will run this time at the NCAA as the quality of the field will surely push him to that level.“To be in the top three, Arantxa will need to jump that Olympic qualifying standard and she is in great condition to accomplish that.”Meanwhile, Taylor Ashley Bean endured a difficult time running at a meet in Colorado’s high altitude, finishing in 14th place in the 800 metres with a time of 2:16.34.“If your body is not used to running in high altitude it is very difficult,” said Watson.“Taylor was well outside her best of 2:10.53.“All in all, Taylor has had a great season so far and we look forward to a great performance from her at Bermuda’s National Championships and CAC Junior Championships.”
