Smith runs solo for open win
A disappointing open field of just one male and one female turned out for the second Bermuda Track and Field Association cross-country meet of the season at Astwood Park on Saturday.Chayce Smith ran unchallenged to cover the three-mile course in 14 minutes and 32 seconds, his only rival being Shaquille Dill, who was the only entrant in the Boys Under-20 division, finishing in 16:18.With hundreds of women runners competing in yesterday’s popular PartnerRe 5K road race, a low entry was expected in the female field. Rose-Anna Hoey ran alone to win in 17.27.In the Girls Under-20 group, Shuntae Hendrickson won in 20.42 followed by her only competitor in that division, Rachel Fox, in 23.20.The BTFA, however, will take consolation in a healthy turn-out of juniors with some 100 youngsters taking part, many of them hoping to be a part of next year’s Carifta Games team.Kahzi Sealey won the Under-10 boys and Jade Johnston the Under-10 girls groups, for which no times were available because of technical problems.Ryan Outerbidge was the first Under-12 boy over a two-mile course, in 11.18, and Ashley Irby the first girl in 12.34.The Under-14 groups , competing over two miles, saw Aaron Jacobs lead home the boys in 11.01 and Azariah Robinson the girls in 12.56.Nico Barclay won the boys Under-17 race in 16.58 and Zakkiyah Showers the girls Under-17 race in 18.54 over three miles.Among the veterans, Jennie Kelly won the female Masters Division in 23.56 and Midge Oliver the senior Masters in 26.23. Robert Thomas was the men’s Masters winner in 20.32 and Christopher Jones the senior Masters winner in 19.59Full results, see Page 20.
