Jamaica is a hotbed for sprinters so it seems only fitting for the Island’s most popular Caribbean restaurant to sponsor Bermuda’s fastest man.Bermuda sprinter Tre Houston will be fuelled with free food from Jamaican Grill on Court Street to help ease his financial burden while he prepares to qualify next year’s World Championships in Moscow.Houston has been actively seeking sponsorship from local companies since making a permanent return to the Island after two years training in London. He said he was delighted and grateful that Jamaican Grill manager Shawn Thomas had supported his track ambitions by agreeing to feed him free of charge.“I’m very excited and glad this came through with Jamaican Grill,” said the 22-year-old, who competed at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India.“I wasn’t looking for any financial help from Jamaican Grill but I knew they could help with nutrition wise and I like the food and the staff.“After training I can come down here, grab some food and sit off and talk to Shawn.”Houston said it was a nice feeling to have a local business like Jamaican Grill supporting his athletic endeavours.“This sponsorship right here means a lot to me. Obviously I’ll keep pushing for other sponsorship but I’m very grateful to Jamaica Grill and Shawn for their support.”Thomas, whose father is Jamaican, believed sponsoring the Island’s top sprinter was a good fit for the restaurant.“Tre approached me not too long ago looking for some sponsorship. He said he wasn’t looking for financial sponsorship from us but wanted something to help carry him along meal wise,” said Thomas, whose head chef Anthony Benjamin has previously served up food for Jamaican athletes in his homeland.“We thought that would be a great thing for us to do as Tre’s representing Bermuda and we can give him some great nutritious food to help him while he is training.“Obviously Jamaica has produced some great sprinters and now Jamaican Grill is helping one our Bermuda guys.“We will certainly be watching Tre’s movements with interest and he has our full support.”–
