St. George’s GC to host cross-country championships
St George’s Golf Club’s rolling hills will provide the backdrop for next month’s National Cross-Country Championships. The event, to be held on Saturday, December 8 at 8am, will act as qualifiers for the 2013 NACAC Cross-Country Championships in Trinidad.Bermuda National Athletics Association president, Donna Watson, hopes the scenic route will attract a bumper number of competitors.“I know we don’t usually get a good turn-out for cross-country but I’m hoping that because we’re using a different course more people will participate,” she said.“We’re looking forward to it, we’re excited about it, we’ve marked the course and it’s very spectator friendly.“We’re taking advantage of the golf course not being used and a lot of cross-country events overseas are held at golf courses.”Watson said May 24 winner Ashley Estwanik was likely to compete so she could represent the Island at the NACAC Championships.Carifta Games medallists Shaquille Dill, Juma Mouchette and Kyrah Scraders are also expected to enter the race.“I think people are afraid of cross-country,” said Watson. “It’s a difficult event but it’s great for base training whether you’re training for International Race Weekend or May 24.“The race will also decide our champions at all the different age groups and hopefully we will get a good turn-out.”St George’s Golf Club was closed in 2008 following the demolition of the derelict Club Med, although Government have said they will now set a concrete date for reopening the facility.
