Long jumper Smith running for election
Bermuda long jumper Tyrone Smith is running for a board of directors position in the Track and Field Athletes Association (TFAA).Smith, who finished 12th at the London Olympic, hopes to be elected at the annual TFAA meeting next Friday in Daytona, Florida, USA.The TFAA members will be electing board members for the next two-year term. There are seven positions available.If elected Smith, 28, would represent the Caribbean region to ensure the interest of its athletes are also promoted on the international stage.“I think my chances are pretty good because I’m from outside the United States,” he said.“A large proportion of the TFAA are American athletes but they starting to gain membership from Jamaica and Europe.“I’ve been a bit of a showman and they know I’m well-spoken so I think I’ve got a shot.”A TFAA board member are expected to remain current on issues affecting elite track and field athletes, attend conference calls held by the TFAA board of directors and assist with the short-and long-term strategy of the Association.They are also required to use their resources to benefit the TFAA and its initiatives, ensure the bylaws are adhered to, help develop fundraising efforts and revenue streams, drive membership, and other tasks necessary to achieving the Association’s objectives.Current TFAA voting members include Alison Felix (US), Ashton Eaton (US), Kim Collins (Saint Kitts and Nevis), Usain Bolt (Jamaica), Yohan Blake (Jamaica), Tyson Gay (US), David Rudisha (Kenya), Ivet Lalova (Italy) and Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar).The TFAA organisation formed to support the rights and interests of professional track and field athletes.
