Bacard 8K expecting another big entry
Since it was first held six years ago the Bacardi 8K has proven to be one of the Island’s most popular road races, regularly attracting hundreds of runners and walkers.Remarkably, there have only been two different men’s and women’s champions so far, although that could change on Sunday if new names emerge victorious.Husband and wife Chris and Ashley Estwanik are the reigning champions, after successfully defending their 2010 crowns last year.Chris is also the men’s course record holder, setting the fastest time of 24 minutes 46 seconds last year when he won.During the event’s first three years Lamont Marshall and Victoria Fiddick raked up a hat-trick of victories as men’s and women’s champions respectively.Fiddick’s impressive 2008 winning time of 31.13 still stands as the women’s course record.Entries for Sunday’s road race and walk can still be made online today until 5pm. There will be late entries accepted tomorrow at the race number pick-up for a higher fee.The race starts and finishes outside the Bacardi building on Pitts Bay Road and loops out to Spanish Point and then along North Shore Road before returning via Berkeley Hill, St John’s Road and Pitts Bay Road.Organised by the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club, with Spencer Conway as race director, the race will award prizes to the overall winners, the top three across a number of age divisions, and also the top three men and women in the competitive walk. All competitors can enjoy a complimentary light breakfast after the race.Race numbers can be collected from Bacardi between 9am and noon tomorrow. On Sunday the 8K walk starts at 8.30am, with the main 8K road race starting at 9am.Online entries are available at www.racedayworld.com
