I’m fit and raring to go, insists Tyrone

Hopeful: Tyrone Smith

Bermuda long jumper Tyrone Smith insists his injury problems are behind him as he steps up his preparations for the new season. The Olympian recently underwent a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection for his knee to help speed up the recovery process of the niggling injuries that plagued him last year. The PRP injection is a new treatment available for patients with chronic tendon injuries that may be slow in healing. The procedure draws your own blood, spins it in a centrifuge and breaks down the haemoglobin from the plasma and concentrates the fluids, inducing the healing the process a bit faster.“I took a PRP shot for my patella tendon as my issues last year were due to my patella and quad tendon. I’ve done quite a bit of rehab and it has got stronger but I still need to continue with rehab in order to be ready for the season,” said Smith.“It should improve my tendon strength and elasticity so there won’t be anything but positives after this.“During the injection period there’s slightly less activity but hopefully you return back to the same intensity in a matter of weeks rather than months.“I haven’t stopped training, I have just not done certain activities that will hinder the recovery.“Training is going well, I’m doing some new treatments to help me not have as many injuries as I had last year and I’ve put on some weight and muscle so I’m much stronger then before.“Speed tests and vertical jumping are helping me with my agility so I’m in good shape at the moment.“I’m pretty excited to be where I am and can’t wait for the season to start in a few months time.”Smith capped off 2012 with a 12th place overall at the London Olympics after facing elimination before his final qualifying attempt when he produced his best jump of the season (7.97 metres). The Houston-based athlete is aiming to start his season in April at the Mount SAC Relays in California, one of the biggest track and field events in the United States, before heading to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa a few weeks later.“The Mount SAC relays or the Drake Relays in Iowa will be my destination, so April will be the start of my season,” added Smith.“My international schedule kicks off with the Asia circuit after the Relays, so Shanghai, Japan, Kawasaki and Beijing will be the ones I want to open my professional season with.”
