More athletes reach Carifta standard
Bermuda athletes hoping to reach the qualifying standards for this month’s Carifta Games in Bahamas have one more week to do so, following Saturday’s meet at the National Sports Centre which took the total qualifiers at 11.Jeneko Place ran 10.89 seconds in the Under-20 100 metres to reach the B standard while Tiara DeRosa threw two personal bests in the discus and shot with throws of with a throw of 34.65 and 11.39 respectively.Juma Mouchette came agonisingly close to qualifying for the B standard in the 5,000 metres, running a time of 17:01 to just miss the qualifying mark of 17:00.“We have several athletes just outside of the standard; Zakiyyah Showers (11.35 in the 3000m) with the standard being 11.15, Kionje Somner (11.55 in the Under-17 100 metres) with the standard being 11.30 and Jahnai Perinchief in the Under-17 high jump (1.81) with the standard 1.85,” explained Bermuda National Athletics Association president Donna Watson said.“We have Tahiraah Butterfield and Tyra Stovell close to the standard in the Under-20 100 metres. Of course we have Dage Minors who is competing in the US and competing very well. Justin Donawa (triple jumper), is home for his break and will get to compete during his stay.“Jaret Simons is also in school in Jamaica and we are looking forward to receiving some good results from him also.”Watson is hoping to double the number of qualifiers by the weekend as four more meets are scheduled. Understandably the size of the Bermuda team will be smaller than the record 55 who represented the country on home soil last year. A charter full of Bermudians will fly to Bahamas to witness the Games over the Easter holiday weekend, March 28 to April 1.“We are in high preparation for Carifta, the deadline for final entries being March 11th and we have four more track meets scheduled,” said Watson. “The charter is ready to take off with just a few seats available.“This year we are hoping for around 20 athletes, with us looking at quality not quantity. Of course with the costs being more this year we would not be able to have the numbers like last year.”
