23-strong team will head to Bahamas

Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) have announced the 23 athletes that will represent Bermuda at next month’s Carifta Games in Bahamas.Included in the squad will be last year’s Under-17 triple gold medallist Justin Donawa who will compete in the Under-20 category along with Kyrah Scraders, who won silver in the Under-17 1,500 metres last year.Eight unqualified athletes have also been named in the squad and will be able to compete in their events despite not meeting the standard.BNAA president Donna Watson said: “We are pleased to announce the athletes who have been selected for the Carifta Games.“There were two groups selected for various reasons, one being we have a number of seats put aside for the athletes on the charter which have been paid for.“We want to give our athletes as much opportunities as we can.”“There are conditions of course specifically for the unqualified athletes in terms of commitment in training and consistent performances in any track meets.“We will also be having all athletes analysed for injuries before they leave Bermuda.”The Carifta Games is an annual regional athletics competition consisting of track and field events.There are two age categories: Under-17 and Under-20.Qualified AthletesUnder-17 Women: Tiara Derosa (shot put, discus), Kyrah Scraders (800m, 1,500m), Quasshie Douglas (800m, 1,500m), Sakari Famous (High Jump)Under-20 Women: Kerri Furbert (long jump)Under-17 Men: Michaiah Robinson (400m, 800m); Ethan Philip (long jump); Antonio Bailey (400m)Under-20 Men: Bruce Degrilla (long jump); Justin Donawa (triple jump); Chas Smith (high jump), Jeneko Place (100m, 200m), Juma Mouchette (1,500m, 5,000m), Dage Minors (800m, 1,500m), Quinn Simmons (discus)Unqualified AthletesUnder-17 Women: Zakiyyah Showers (5,000m)Under-20 Women: Tahirah Butterfield (100m, 200m), Rachel Fox (400m, 800m)Under-17 Men: Kionje Somner (100m, 200m), Daniel Oatley (3,000m), Jahnai Perinchief (High Jump)Under-20 Men: Naquan Smith (Javelin), Nate Hartwig (5,000m)Management team: Lloyd VanPutten (male team manager), Mia Black (female team manager), Troy Douglas (head coach), Sonya Smith (throwing coach), Jarita Vickers (middle distance coach), Brian Wellman (jumps coach), Shirlene Dill (physio)
