Butterfield produces top ten showing Down Under

Tyler Butterfield produced a strong showing at the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship in Melbourne, Australia yesterday.The Bermuda Olympian battled through brutal conditions to place tenth in a field of 46 professional male triathletes.Butterfield completed the 1.5K swim, 180K bike and 42.2K run in an overall time of eight hours, two minutes and five seconds respectively.He completed the swim in 21 minutes and 45 seconds, the bike stage in four hours, 31 minutes and 59 seconds and the run in four hours, four minutes and 41 seconds.Butterfield came out of the water in 25th, surged as high as sixth after posting the sixth fastest time on the bike before falling slightly off the pace during the run.Earlier this month the two-time Olympian finished third at the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon.Butterfield, who is based in Colorado, USA, is bidding to qualify for October's Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.Yesterday's event saw participants compete in high seas that forced organizers to reduce the course in half as well as headwinds gusting to 30 knots on the bike.Spaniard Eneko Llanos (7:36:07) claimed overall honours Down Under while Corrine Abraham (8:10:55) of Wales topped the professional women's field.
