Bermuda long jumper Tyrone Smith had a day to forget in Prague on Monday, fouling four times on his way to a fourth-place finish.Smith, who picked up his first international win of the year in Paris last week, was unable to find his mark at the World Athletic Championships in Prague. The two-time Olympian’s best jump on the day was 7.76 metres. He told The Royal Gazette he was slightly perplexed by his disappointing display considering how well he jumped in Paris.“Things went quite well in Paris,” Smith said. “I had a strong series of jumps with three jumps over 7.90 metres and of course one over eight (8.09 metres).“I'm finally starting to feel comfortable on the runway after a very up and down season last year. In Prague, I didn't get on as well as I fouled four out of six jumps.“My best jump ended up being the safe jump I put down to go through to the finals.”Smith believed the cold, rainy weather in Prague may have hampered his performance.“I had some really decent fouls but I had some issues dealing with the weather conditions,” he said. “It was cooler and raining during the competition and I let some of the organisation of the meet distract me while I was trying to compete.“It’s good to have to deal with these things now so that come Moscow (The IAAF World Championships) I won't be fazed by anything.”Next up for Bermuda’s Athlete of the Year is a meet in Poland, where he expects to return to his best form.“I didn’t compete in the Rome Diamond league but I'm sitting in a really great position to get into the Birmingham and Paris Diamond Leagues in the coming weeks,” said the 28-year-old.“Next up is Poland and I'm looking to put together the positives from my meet in Paris and here in Prague and get a jump over 8.15.“I would love to be over 8.20 but coming back from injury I'm very happy to be making progress.“The 8.09 I jumped equals my third furthest career jump so anything over that shows that I'm in some of the best form of my career.“It’s going not going to happen in just one competition but by the time the finals of the World Championships are over I fully expect to have a new PB and Bermuda national record.”Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) president Donna Watson added: “I’m very pleased with Tyrone's performances as he is attempting to qualify for World Championships.“He is very much on course and I can see nothing but great things this year.“Tyrone has had a real go at changing his stride and approach to the runway and his performance in France showed that it is paying off.”
