Hoey makes solid start in record bid

Rose-Anna Hoey had a good start in her bid to break Dawn Richardson's record in the Bermuda Triangle Full Challenge after posting the fifth-best time out of her competitors in last night's KPMG Front Street Mile.

Hoey, aiming to lower Richardson's 2009 time of 4hr 35sec, ran a 5:51.9 mile which was only six seconds slower than Richardson's.

This morning Hoey, who is also one of six competitors raising funds for the PALS charity, will compete in the 10K, which starts and finishes at the National Stadium.

Hoey is aiming for around 41 minutes which would leave her to do about a three hours and 12 minutes to break the seven-year-old record.

Richardson ran a 41.20 time in the 10K and did the marathon the next day in 3:12.28.

“Two things will be really tough — the hilly second half of the 10K when you need to save your legs for the next day, and the last 13.1 miles look for the marathon,” Hoey said this week.

If Hoey wins the full challenge she will become the first runner to be a champion in both the half and full version of the Bermuda Triangle Challenge.
