Bermuda trio to learn NCAA fate
Dage Minors, Kyle Webb and Shaquille Dill are among Bermuda’s overseas collegian athletes who will be waiting to learn if they have met the qualifying standard for this year’s NCAA Championships.
The NCAA will announce the qualifiers today.
“Hopefully if they make it to the NCAA Championships in any event, that is a huge feat as only the very top athletes qualify for NCAA,” Donna Raynor, the Bermuda National Athletics Association president, said.
The trio are fresh off impressive displays for their schools at the weekend.
Franklin Pierce University student Minors shattered his school’s 800 metres record at the BU Last Chance Meet.
The two-times Carifta Games medal winner set a new mark of 1min 49.76sec, the seventh fastest time in the nation, en route to a sixth-place finish.
Saint Augustine student Dill, who holds the junior national 800 record, placed first in the 400 at the George Mason Last Chance Meet, hitting the tape in 48.38 to pip a team-mate at the finish.
Purdue student Webb, the junior national 400 record holder, was on his school’s 4x400 relay team that set a new school record in the discipline at the Big Ten Championships. Purdue’s 4x400 relay team set a new mark of 3:06.59, with Webb placing third in the second leg of the race.
Webb also competed in the 200, winning his qualifying heat in a blistering time of 21:19 to reach the final, where he placed eighth with a slower time of 21:39.
“These are fantastic times as we are talking about indoor track, which is more difficult than outdoor track with all of the small turns and size of the track,” Raynor added.
“Bermuda should be proud of these athletes.
“They are going up against the best in the US in their region and are performing at top notch.
“That says a lot regarding the base that they have received in Bermuda and their commitment to the sport of athletics.”
