DeRosa continues record assault
Two records fell last night at the Bermuda School Sports Federation’s Senior Athletics Championships as Carifta-bound Tiara DeRosa, of Berkeley, broke another mark held by former Olympian Sonya Smith in the discus.
DeRosa, who broke Smith’s 35-year-old national junior record in the discus with a throw of 45.02 metres at a track meet last month, went past Smith’s over-16 girls record, which had stood since 1981. DeRosa’s best effort of 38.40 was more five metres better than Smith’s 33.34 throw.
Another Berkeley student heading to Carifta next week, high jumper Sakari Famous, also broke a record in the high jump when she shattered Latroya Darrell’s 13-year-old record in the under-16 girls high jump with a best leap of 1.75 metres.
Ashley Irby, of Saltus, continued her impressive form on the track in winning champion girl in the under-16 division. Irby claimed gold in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 metres. Saltus’ Zekiah Lewis also grabbed two golds in the long jump and triple jump.
Deneo Brangman was the star of the under-16 boys division, winning three golds in the 100, 200 and the 400 metres, while Neil Figureido, of Saltus, was a double winner in the long jump and triple jump.
Demiqua Daniels, from CedarBridge Academy, won the over-16 girls title after finishing first in the 3000 metres and javelin and taking second place in the shot put. finishing second in the shot put. DeRosa also won the shot put while CedarBridge Academy’s Samira Lowe-Darrell won the long jump, 800m and finished second in the triple jump.
Berkeley’s Akim Johnston was the over-16 boys champion after winning the 3,000 metres, while finishing second in the 800 and 1,500 metres. Tyler Smith, from Bermuda High School, warmed up for his first Carifta appearance next weekend by comfortably winning the 1,500 metres yesterday, as well as the 800 metres. Smith, crowned Junior Athlete of the Year on Thursday evening, will compete in the 5,000 metres at Carifta.
Elisha Darrell, the Berkeley student who is also heading to Carifta next Wednesday, won the high jump and triple jump. Quincy Kuzyk, of Somersfield, warmed up for his Carifta debut by winning the under-16 1,500 metres yesterday. He will be a 3,000 metres competitor at the Games.
Jahkera Tucker, of CedarBridge Academy, won the 100 and 200 metres for over-16 girls. She, too, is a member of the Carifta team. Jai Talbot, of CedarBridge, was second to Tucker in the 100 and 200, and won the 400 metres final.
Messiah Greaves, of BHS, claimed gold in the under-16 girls 400 metres, while Brijette Basden, of CedarBridge, won the 100 metres final for under-16 girls and Inshan-nae Smith, also of CedarBridge, claimed the under-16 200 metres title.
Berkeley Institute were crowned overall champions with 642 points. CedarBridge Academy finished second on 584½ points and Saltus third on 437½.
