Famous claims first medal at Carifta
High jumper Sakari Famous picked up Bermuda’s first medal at the Carifta Games in Grenada on Saturday, taking the bronze with a leap of 1.77 metres in the under-18 girls category.
Famous, who won a bronze medal last year and silver in 2013 and 2014, remained in contention during Saturday’s first session of competition, eventually beaten by two Jamaicans who took gold and silver. Shiann Salmon had the winning jump of 1.82.
In the evening session, Djymon Reid placed seventh in the under-18 boys 100 final in a time of 11sec.
He qualified for the final by placing third in heat three with a personal best of 10.84 seconds, while Stephan Dill was third in heat four and just failed to reach the final after clocking a personal best of 10.92.
Jahkera Tucker placed tenth in the under-18 girls 100 preliminaries, clocking 12.05 seconds. Yesterday morning, Aaron Jacobs placed seventh in the under-18 800 preliminaries in 2:03.46 in heat one, which did not qualify him for the final. Kevin Miller finished sixth in the under-20 high jump with a best leap of 1.95.
Jermaine Francis, of St Kitts and Nevis, won the under-20 high jump with a jump of 2.11.
Alexis Trott just missed out on a medal in her first Carifta Games, placing fourth in the under-20 girls long jump, while Elisha Darrell was fifth in the under-18 high jump.
Middle-distance runners Lynsey Palmer and Quincy Kuzyk both failed in bids for podium finishes yesterday in the 3,000, while Ethan Philip finished fifth in the under-20 long jump final.
Tyler Smith in the 5,000 and discus thrower Tiara DeRosa are hoping to add to Bermuda’s medal haul before the competition wraps up today.
