Sprinter Caitlyn Bobb is thrilled to have set national and school indoor records in the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational at the weekend but admits her impressive display fell short of her expectations.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, junior athlete ran the women’s 500 metres at the Liberty University Indoor Track Complex in 1min 2.23sec to eclipse the previous school record of 1:12.78 set by Paulette Fogle in 2015.

“I am excited I was able to lower my national record and break my school record but I wanted better,” Bobb told The Royal Gazette.

“But it is a learning experience for me regarding my race plan and executing and inshallah my 400m would benefit from this weekend’s performance.”

Bobb improved on the previous national indoor record of 1:12.93 she already held, which she achieved on the way to claiming victory in the women’s 500 metres at the Navy Invitational at Wesley A Brown Field House in Annapolis, Maryland last December.

The 2021 junior female athlete of the year and multiple Carifta Games medal-winner finished runner-up behind Gia Trevisan, who led the field across the line in 1:10.69 competing unattached at last weekend’s indoor meet.

“Going into the race, I was aware that a more experienced Italian 400m runner was a lane behind me,” Bobb added.

“My game plan was to get out, sit on her back and let her pull me through the race. However, with 150m to go, she pulled away and I did my best to stay behind her.

“Despite not winning the race and hitting the time I wanted, I finished the race healthy and with a new personal record.”

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Naomi Clarke rounded off the podium in third with a time of 1min 14.86sec.
