Sakari Famous produces best jump of season on way to NCAA Div I triumph
Sakari Famous produced an outdoor season best on the way to a second successive victory on the NCAA Division I women’s high jump scene at the weekend.
The McNeese State University senior earned the gold medal after successfully clearing 1.80 metres competing in the ULL Louisiana Classics, which was hosted by the University of Louisiana last Saturday.
“Placing first is always an amazing feeling as it helps build confidence for future meets and to strive for more goals,” Famous told The Royal Gazette.
“This meet had amazing weather and I believed it played a role in being able to get some great jumps in.
“My team-mates were also able to get some good jumps and their support also helped me clear the heights.”
The former Junior Female Athlete of the Year award winner, six-times Carifta Games champion and Commonwealth Youth Games bronze medal-winner’s effort eclipsed her previous season best outdoors of 1.60 metres at the Cowboy Relays Bob Hayes Louisiana Challenge the previous weekend.
Famous was among four McNeese State University athletes earning gold medals at last weekend’s track meet in Lafayette, including Marcus Francis (men’s shot put), Blanche Beard (women’s javelin) and Mariah Lee (women’s hammer throw).
Back-to-back victories have given the Bermudian a huge confidence boost as she strides towards her season goals, which include breaking her own national outdoor record (1.84 metres), claiming the conference title and competing at the NCAA Championships in her final year at McNeese State University.
Famous has made a spectacular comeback from a potential career-ending back injury after securing five victories, three during the indoor season, and broken her own national and school indoor records after clearing 1.81 metres at the McNeese State Indoor Meet in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Asked what has been to the key to her recent success, the 24-year-old said: “I would say trusting in God’s plan and knowing that more success can come even if it doesn’t show at this moment. Having confidence that great things can eventually happen.”
