Sakari Famous sets national record in Texas high jump win
Sakari Famous leapt for joy after setting multiple records and a personal best in the Horned Frog Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas, at the weekend.
The Bermudian secured top spot on the podium after clearing 1.85m to set a national record, with the mark also good enough to set meet and facility records
“It was an amazing jump day and I’m filled with emotions of happiness, gratefulness and a sense of accomplishment” an elated Famous told The Royal Gazette.
“This jump had been a goal for me for a long time and to finally jump over it with ease, felt really good,
“That competition was a product of continuous hard work and mental toughness along with all the support from my family and friends, coach Marissa Chew and my training partners.”
The 25-year-old placed high expectations on herself heading into the meet at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex.
“I went to the meet with a mindset to jump that but what exceeded my expectations was setting three new records in one jump,” Famous said.
The talented athlete eclipsed her own national record of 1.84m, which she achieved in Bloomington, Indiana, nearly three years ago.
The win last weekend comes two months after recording her first win of the outdoor season as a post-collegiate athlete at the TCU Alumni Invitational, where she soared to 1.80m to clinch the gold medal.
Famous, who competed unattached at the weekend, is reaping the benefits of a new mental approach and encouragement from Olympic medal-winner Lindon Victor, of Grenada.
“The key was a very strong mindset and true belief in my ability to jump high,” she said.
“I train in a group of other pro athletes and one of them is Grenada’s Olympic bronze medal-winner, Lindon Victor, who reminded me that you have to believe in yourself. So from then I continuously work on my mindset, which I know led me to this result.”
