Watch: Caitlyn Bobb wins gold at ACC Championships
Pocket rocket Caitlyn Bobb took her track and field career to another level by setting multiple records on her way to winning the 400 metres at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Saturday.
The diminutive Bobb set a Bermuda national record and a Virginia Tech programme record when producing a storming final 100 metres to take the gold medal, stopping the clock at 51.11sec.
That time beat the national record she set a day earlier in the preliminary round of 51.57, which was good enough to make Bobb the top seed in the final.
In that final Bobb looked to have plenty to do with 200 metres to go as she attempted to chase down Florida State’s Kaelyah Liburd in the lane outside her, with the height differences between the two athletes stark.
The taller Baker held the advantage and the longer stride entering the final 100 metres but despite Bobb looking as if she was taking two strides to the Duke runner’s one, she showed guts and determination to pass her nearest rival for a clear win.
After the race, Bobb was interviewed live on the track by ESPN and was asked how she felt entering the home straight.
“I really just wanted to win,” Bobb said. “I didn’t see anything except for the finish line and I just kept pushing my arms and got there, thank God. ”This is all I really wanted to do.
“I’m only 5ft 2in and 120lb so I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do to keep up with these amazing girls.”
Victory for Bobb vindicates her decision to use the NCAA transfer portal to make the move to Virginia Tech, from the University of Maryland, last summer after she felt she needed a change of scenery and a new coaching regime.
Since joining Virginia Tech, she has set multiple personal bests and Bermuda national records. She also won a silver medal in the 400 metres at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoors Championships before taking gold here.
