Carifta athletes shine in Clevonte Lodge-Bean Classic
A couple of Bermuda’s Carifta Games athletes took the opportunity to shine on home soil in the Clevonte Lodge-Bean Sprint Challenge on Sunday.
Held at Flora Duffy National Stadium, the event featured young athletes from the ages of 3 to 17 coming together to honour Lodge-Bean, one of Bermuda’s brightest track stars who died at the age of 18 in 2020.
Amara Samuels and Surii Russell, who competed for Bermuda in Trinidad & Tobago last month, showed their class with Samuels winning the under-17 200 metres for girls in 25.57sec ahead of Kelise Wade and Zakhya Scott.
Russell won the under-17 boys 200 metres in 23.76 and the 400 metres in 57.21 on both occasions beating Evan Andrade into second place.
The youngest winners on the day competed over 25 and 50 metres with Thai-Ari Stovell winning both races for 3-year – old girls. Life Chitranandra won the boys 25 metre race in that age group, with Giannis Daniels successful over 50 metres.
Xara Lambe won both girls races for 4-year-olds, with Caleb Williams winning the boys race over 25 metres and Judah Maringi successful over the longer distance.
Budding athletes aged 5 and 6 competed over 50 and 75 metres, with Aiyana Houston and Gyasi Dowling dominating the girls and boys races respectively in the younger age group. Brooklyn Brown and Jahkairo Burgess-Samuels did the same among 6-year-olds.
From the age of 7, athletes completed over 100, 200 and 400 metres with many of the runners choosing to compete in all three events.
Bree Simmons won the girls race for athletes aged 7 and 8 over 100 metres, with Diamond Morris completing the 200 and 400 double. Theo Smith dominated among the boys, winning all three races.
Aalirah Daniels took top honours in the 100 and 200 metres for girls aged 9 and 10. Yara Muhammad won the 400 metres. Conor Kane beat Ethan Anderson into second in all three races for boys.
Leydi Raynor was fastest in the 100 metres for girls aged 11 and 12, with Sukanya Jobson picking up the 200 and 400 metres. Asa Trew-Smith did the 100 and 200 double for the boys, with Jaylon Glasford successful over 400 metres.
Zakhya Scott won the 100 and 200 in the girls under-17 division.
