Bermuda Pacers hoping to shine again
Bermuda Pacers will be hoping to pick up where they left off in the prestigious Russell E Blunt East Coast Invitational at Durham Memorial Stadium, in North Carolina, this weekend.
The local track club produced their best showing on the international scene after securing 53 medals, including 21 gold, blazing to seven meet records and achieving 22 personal-best performances on the way to finishing runners-up among the 123 international teams at the recent Flying Angels International Track and Field Championships in Toronto.
Leading the charge for Bermuda Pacers in North Carolina are distance runners Tobiah Goodchild and Gianluca Bortoli who are competing in the 15-16 boys’ 800, 1,500, and 3,000 metres.
Carina Bortoli heads up the female members on the team along with fellow debutant Zakhya Scott. Bortoli is competing in the 17-18 girls’ 1,500 and 3,000 metres and Scott in the girls’ 13-14 100, 200 metres and 4x400 metre relay.
Riana Robinson, Amaya Davis, Sukanya Jobson and Elenai Bortoli are competing in the girls’ 13-14 400, 800, 1,500 and 3,000, 100 metres, 4x400 relay, long jump and triple jump.
Distance runners Timothy Pearman and Ronan Davidge are competing in the 13- 14 boys’ 400, 800 and 1,500 and 3,000 metres.
Ajani Trott, Jadon Lightbourne and Jemani Scott are also making their debut at the event competing in the 11-12 boys’ 100, 200, 400, 800 metres and long jump.
Ava St Luce and Naomi MacGuinness, who is also making her debut at the track meet, are representing Bermuda Pacers in the 11-12 girls’ 100, 200, 800, 1,500 and 3,000 metres.
Giselle Reid Rubaine is carrying the team’s medal hopes alone in the 9-10 girls’ 100 and 200 metres and the long jump.
Raelyn Robinson and Elliott Davidge, the two youngest members of the team, are competing in the 8 and under girls’ 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500 metres and long jump.
Bermuda Pacers are making their 43rd appearance at the annual track meet where they will be among 1000 athletes from the United States and Canada.
The local track club secured 16 medals, including five golds, and set a meet record at last year’s event.
