Early chance for athletes to qualify for Carifta Games
Bermuda’s young athletes have a chance to hit the qualifying standards for the Carifta Games when the first of four trials are held on Wednesday.
Flora Duffy Stadium is the venue for the event, which is scheduled for 4.30pm to 6pm. Athletes who perform within the required standards have an opportunity to be included in the island’s team for the Games, which takes place in Grenada from April 4 to 6.
The Bermuda National Athletics Association has scheduled other trials for February 4, February 18 and March 4.
According to Jarita Vickers, the BNAA president, the trials were included in the season’s timetable to afford athletes better chances of qualifying.
As of Tuesday, 19 athletes had registered in the under-17 and under-19 age brackets across four events ― the 100, 400 and 1,500 metres and long jump.
“We’ve added a few Wednesdays which are irregular meets to the already scheduled Saturday meets,” Vickers told The Royal Gazette.
“We included these in the calendar to give athletes more opportunities to qualify for this year’s Games.
“With the season having just started, this early-season meet provides a great opportunity for athletes to test themselves, assess their current form and identify areas for further development.
“The BNAA also recently launched its athlete assessment programme, partnering with Evolution Healing Centre to deliver comprehensive evaluations.
“These assessments support safe performance progression while assisting with the early identification of physical, biomechanical and technical risk factors that could impact performance.
“This is a long-term initiative and the athletes are excited about using access to this level of support. We are thankful to Sandro Fubler and his team for providing this service.”
