Three Bermudian student-athletes competed at the Sunshine Showcase, held in Gainesville, Florida, over the weekend.

With Miles Outerbridge missing as a result of sickness after his exploits at the VA Showcase a week before, Amaris Munya and Arima Turner, both from Montverde Academy, together with Pria Wilson, of IMG Academy, took to the track at Alachua County Sports and Events Centre for the indoor meet.

Munya, who ran the mile and 4x400 metres relay, was satisfied with her performances in the two events. She achieved her personal best of 5 min 37.07sec in the mile, with her team’s time in the relay not recorded after one of the runners left the track due to some discomfort.

“My races this weekend went great,” Munya told The Royal Gazette.

“I felt more confident and prepared this weekend. The main goal for the meet was to be aggressive, get out strong and maintain as long as possible.

“The mile is not my speciality but merely preparation work for it and I feel I executed that well. It was another amazing experience and I’m looking forward to the next meet.”

Turner competed in the 60 metres dash and the 200 metres, with the 17-year-old coming out of the races pleased with the progress she is making.

Turner stopped the clock at 7.79 in the shorter distance, recording the eleventh-fastest time among the females, while the 25.08 she clocked in the 200 placed the Bermudian sixth.

“This weekend really shows that the work I’ve been putting in is paying off,” Turner said.

“My performances at recent meets have been trending in a positive direction. I’m focused on continuing that momentum through consistent effort in practice and trusting the guidance of my coaches.”

Wilson recorded 7.99 sec in the 60, the 24th fastest over the distance and her time of 26.48 in the 200, was 32nd best.
