Flora Duffy’s track record broken at senior school meet

Flora Duffy’s record in the girls under-16 3,000 metres was broken by Brooklyn Myers at the Senior School Track and Field Championships on Wednesday.

Myers, representing Bermuda High School for Girls, clocked 11min 19.2sec, to better the 11:32 Duffy ran while representing Warwick Academy in 2004.

In the same age group for boys, Sanchez Smith, of Saltus Grammar set a new record of 9:34, lowering the previous best of 9:39, set by Cameron Creighton in 2010.

Myers was not aware of the record before she took to the track at Flora Duffy Stadium.

“I wasn’t even looking towards breaking the record and I was just running for my team,” Myers told The Royal Gazette.

“It’s shocking but I feel really good because I worked really hard for it. It was a good race, at first it was really hard because there was a lot of wind coming on the straight areas, so I had to draft behind people.

“The last bit it was a little hard because you have to push but overall it was a really good race.”

Myers went out early with Riana Robinson and Sofia Leclerc and the three runners were stuck together before the winner surged ahead going into the last lap

“Riana and I forgot our watches so Sophia was keeping the time of our splits,” Myers said.

“I was just staying behind her and she yelled out a couple of splits for us and I just drafted off of them until the last couple laps, then I went off on my own.

“I didn’t really know when I was going to push but I knew that if I didn't at the last 400, someone was probably going to catch me.”

Myers, the winner of the under-16 race at the Senior School Cross Country Championships last month, finished third in the 17 and under race at the Butterfield Mile in January, when Robinson was the champion.

“Riana is always beating me in a lot of races,” the 14-year-old said.

“Even when we were younger, I just always looked up to her. She’s a really cool person and she’s super fast.”

Myers is back in action on Friday in the 1,500 metres with her sights set on securing Carifta qualification.

“I’m trying to qualify for Carifta in the 1,500 at the moment and I think I’m one second off,” she added.

“They only take two people and Riana has 5:01 and Elena Bortoli has 5:00, so I need to beat one of them to put myself in contention.”

Smith knew he stood a good chance of breaking the record as his personal best of 9:27.70 was faster than Creighton. That time came during a Bermuda National Athletics Association meet this year, when he qualified for the Carifta Games.

Jackson Langley was the runner-up in the boys over 16 3,000 metres at the Senior School Track & Field Championships held at Flora Duffy Stadium (Photograph by Blaire Simmons)

“My parents told me this morning about the record and I realised that my PB was faster than the record, so I knew I was able to get it,” Sanchez said.

“Even though it’s not a PB, I feel really good about breaking the record here, it’s really cool and I didn’t even feel that fatigued in the race.

“Dylan was right behind me, holding me and I thought he was going to hold me for the whole race, but he ended up dropping off.

“There was really good competition with Dylan and Jens Drea. We’re all triathletes and I see them in mostly all my competitions, so it was nice racing against them all the time.”

Days after finishing thirteenth at the World Triathlon Development Regional Cup Salinas in Puerto Rico, Eiselt secured a Carifta qualifying time. The 15-year-old has never represented Bermuda at the annual athletics competition

“I came to run this just to get a qualifying time for the Carifta Games in Grenada,” the 15-year-old said.

“The qualifying time was 9:58 and I just ran this at about 90 per cent effort. I just ran it to get the time not to compete with Sanchez or anyone.

“I did 9:45 and I’ve qualified. I'm just going to talk to my parents about the logistics of how I’m going to get there.”

A pulsating race was witnessed between the Warwick Academy duo of Gianluca Bortoli and Jackson Langley in the over 16 boys 3,000.

Langley had the lead for the better part of the contest, before Bortoli closed him down heading into the last lap and went to cross the line in 9:13.50, with Langley second in 9:36.18.

Winners in the under-16 division were Saltus’s Kenzie Lawrence in the triple jump, Maya Williams-Johnson, from Berkeley, in the shot put and BHS thrower Rachel Kelly in the discus.

The Berkeley Institute claimed three golds in the over-16 girls division with Haley Trott winning the shot put, Latavia Hayward the high Jump and Amari Graham the triple jump. Warwick Academy’s Tatiana Sousa broke Berkeley’s dominance henn winning the discus.

The boys division is much closer with Berkeley 14 points ahead of Saltus Grammar with 114 points.
