Watch: Miles Outerbridge just misses out on sprint double at Carifta

Miles Outerbridge just touched off in 200 metres final

Miles Outerbridge narrowly missed out on doing the sprint double at the Carifta Track and Field Championships after finishing second in the 200 metres final.

Outerbridge made a blistering start and led the field into the home straight but was just run down late by Sanjay Seymore, from Jamaica.

Seymore, who was one of the favourites to win the 100 metres before being thrown out of the race for a false start, produced a strong late finish to pass Outerbridge only inside the final ten metres, finishing in 20.63sec.

Outerbridge finished just 0.04 behind in second with Eagan Neely, from Bahamas finishing third in 20.73.

The Bermudian teenager can console himself with the fact he is now the fourth-fastest ever in the men’s 100 at the regional competition after winning gold on Saturday night.

Jamaica’s Yohan Blake (10.11 and 10.18) and Davonte Howell (10.15), from Cayman Islands, are the only sprinters to have run faster than Outerbridge, who smashed the national record when posting 10.29 to stun the region and win gold at the showpiece event.

On the final night of the Carifta Championships, Gianluca Bortoli came heartbreakingly close to picking up another medal for Bermuda in the boys under-20 5,000 metres.

Bortoli was in a medal position for most of the contest and had a huge gap on the fourth-placed runner with a lap to go. But his early exertions took a heavy late toll and he was passed for the bronze medal with the finish line in sight.

The teenager eventually finished fifth in 16:11.83.

After being congratuled by sports minister Owen Darrell and One Bermuda Alliance leader Ben Smith after his gold medal yesterday, Outerbridge and the other Carifta medal winners have been congratulated for their efforts by the Progressive Labour Party.

“The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party joins all of Bermuda in congratulating Bermudian athletes Miles Outerbridge, the girls’ swimming relay team, Sanchez Smith, Rory Shepherd and Teagan Mewett on their performances at the Carifta Games in Grenada over the weekend,” PLP chair Dawn Simmons said.

“These achievements are a testament to their focus, dedication and sacrifice as they cemented Bermuda’s place on the world athletic stage. We congratulate all our athletes and recognize his coaches, his family, and everyone who helped them to attain these remarkable achievements.

“We wish them and the Bermuda Team much success as the Carifta Games continue.”
