A stretch of Harrington Sound Road which was closed due to a sinkhole yesterday is now reopened to all motorists, the Ministry of Public Works said yesterday.

According to a statement, the road was reopened on Sunday night after initial repairs, and the ministry’s highways section will look further into the cause of the road collapse once the rainfall has subsided.

Minister of Public Works Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch said: “I’m grateful for the quick response to this incident on Sunday from our highways section, which wasted no time in sealing off the area as soon as it was brought to our attention.

“I’m also grateful that no one was injured and that no vehicles were damaged in what could have been a serious road traffic incident.

“This occurrence demonstrates the need for the road infrastructure upgrades the ministry is carrying out island-wide.

“The road trench work and related works are necessary to improve our public structures for the future.”
