Two crashes lead to the death of a male motorcyclist aged 50

A 51-year-old man has been arrested after a motorcyclist died on Monday night following a single-vehicle crash and later apparently being struck by a truck.

Police have also named the victim as 50-year-old Arnold Astwood.

It is understood that Mr Astwood was travelling west along South Road, Southampton, near Horseshoe Road when he crashed at about 9.45pm.

As he was being tended to by several members of the public, he was then struck by a truck that drove away while also headed in a westerly direction.

Mr Astwood was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

A police spokesman said that a 51-year-old-man has been arrested and was being interviewed.

Earlier, a police spokeswoman said that a vehicle was also impounded at the scene.

Police have asked anyone with information on the collision to call Constable Jason Ming on 717-0862 or e-mail him at jming@bps.bm.

They also offered their condolences to Mr Astwood’s family.

Mr Astwood’s death marks the third road fatality of 2023.
