Eighth road fatality of 2023 named by police

An American visitor medevaced to the United States for treatment after a serious road collision on June 6 has been named by police as the island’s eighth road death of 2023.

Duane Presti, 69, was riding a rental scooter with his 67-year-old American wife as pillion passenger when they collided with a local 50-year-old male motorcyclist along Mullet Bay Road, St George’s, at about 3.20pm.

The Bermuda Police Service said that he was officially declared dead on Wednesday.

His wife, who was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, is being supported by a BPS family liaison officer.

The other rider was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Police appealed for any additional witnesses to the crash to come forward.

The public may also share information with a familiar police officer.

It follows two road deaths on the island’s roads last weekend.

Jerry Collantes, 38, a chef at the Swizzle Inn, lost his life after a single-vehicle crash on Saturday.

The Filipino guest worker was riding a motorcycle east on North Shore Road, Devonshire, when he lost control of the bike and crashed into a wall just past the junction with Dock Hill at about 7pm.

Angela Meyer, 46, a visitor from Canada, was a passenger on a rental bike ridden by her 47-year-old husband when they crashed just before 5pm on Sunday on Middle Road, west of Evans Bay in Southampton.

Both were officially named by police on Monday.
