A tourist suffered serious head injuries after losing control of her livery cycle in Hamilton Parish on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman was travelling west on North Shore Road near the junction with East Point Lane when she crashed into an embankment shortly before 5pm.

Emergency services arriving at the scene found the woman unconscious but breathing, having suffered injuries to her head and body.

The woman, who is understood to have arrived on the island with her husband on board the cruise ship Carnival Magic, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where she has been detained.

According to a police spokesman, at last check the victim was conscious and alert. Her injuries which are considered serious, but not life-threatening.

The crash caused delays for rush hour commuters, as traffic had to be diverted away from the scene while it was forensically processed.
