A crane was used to help remove a damaged beam after it was struck by a container truck on Canal Road outside Hamilton yesterday afternoon.

The damaged beam was being hoisted by a crane when The Royal Gazette was at the scene at 3.30pm.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said: “Early information suggests that a container truck carrying a 40ft container was travelling south on Canal Road, when it came into contact with a large overhead beam and a retaining wall, causing major damage to the wall and truck.”

The driver of the truck, which was understood to belong to JV Transport, was not said to be injured.

The beam was placed onto a smaller truck so it could be taken from the scene.

Police said the area was closed to traffic until the truck could be removed and damage to the infrastructure assessed.

A Ministry of Public Works spokesman added later that an emergency road closure was in place at the start of Canal Road, adjacent to Marsh Folly Road, until further notice.

Motorists were advised to use caution and avoid the area.

The ministry spokesman added that questions about the closure can be directed to Curtis Charles on 501-3036.

The Gazette contacted JV Transport for comment, but none was received by the time of publication.
