Plans for new asphalt plant in the home run
Component parts for a new asphalt plant are expected to arrive in Bermuda by July, the Ministry of Public Works and Environment announced.
A spokesman said plans for the facility are being finalised and construction will begin in September, pending final approval.
The announcement comes almost one year after Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the former Minister of Public Works, said the plant and new equipment were purchased from US manufacturer Astec Industries for $6.2 million.
Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, said the old government plant, which was put out of action in 2023, had “run its course”.
He explained: “We had to limit operations and work around equipment failures.
“But now, the focus is on building something fit for purpose — the new gear is not just impressive, it is essential.”
The spokesman added that a new milling machine, paver and “Shuttle Buggy” transfer vehicle arrived in Bermuda last week.
Mr Adams, who took a look at the new equipment at the Government quarry, said: “The condition of Bermuda’s roads has been a consistent concern across the island.
“This equipment gives the team a stronger foundation to tackle those concerns.
“It allows them to work more efficiently, deliver higher-quality results and make steady, visible progress.”
Training on the new equipment will support resurfacing works through the end of the year.
The spokesman added: “The investment forms part of a broader plan to improve Bermuda's roads through better co-ordination with utility companies, long-term infrastructure planning and increased public responsiveness.”
