Canal Road is back open after 2024 crash

Canal Road reopened to traffic this week after a crash in the area more than a year ago, the Ministry of Public Works said.

A truck was carrying a 40ft container along the road on May 22, 2024 when it struck an overhead beam and retaining wall, leaving that portion closed.

A spokesman urged motorists to use caution and thanked drivers for their patience and co-operation during the closure.

The spokesman added that the Clarien Iron Kids triathlon and carnival would affect traffic in St David’s on Saturday.

Triathletes will cycle from Clearwater Beach to Southside Road, turn around at Lower Gates Road roundabout and head back to the beach.

Cooper’s Island Road and Southside Road — between Cooper’s Island Road and Lower Gates Road roundabout, including its junction with Tommy Fox Road — will be closed to all traffic between 10.25am and 12.05pm.

Motorists should use caution and follow instructions from police, who are authorised to close off other roads as decided by the Commissioner.

Contact Carolina Orellana at 501-3031 with questions about Canal Road and race representative Chris Williams at 334-8351 about the triathlon.
