Mechanical challenges delay return of Pink Route ferry
The return of ferry service to Paget and Warwick has been pushed back because of continuing mechanical challenges.
A government spokesman said that the Pink Route service will not resume tomorrow as previously announced.
“This essential route has faced ongoing mechanical challenges due to the ageing fleet,” the spokesman said. “The Department of Marine and Ports is actively working to complete necessary repairs.
“Several components require custom machining, which has extended repair timelines despite accelerated efforts.
“The ministry remains committed to restoring service as soon as possible, and we will keep the public informed as repair work progresses.”
It was announced this month that the ferry service was halted because of “urgent mechanical issues”. The service was halted for the same reason twice last month and once in February.
It came after Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport, said in the House of Assembly that the ferries operating the route — the Georgia, Corona and Coralita — were all beyond their intended 30-year design life span.
“These vessels require thorough inspection and maintenance to remain in service,” Mr Darrell said.
“This situation highlights the urgent need for targeted investment in fleet renewal and maintenance to keep the public ferry system running safely and reliably.”
He also said that when the service does resume, it will operate on a “reduced weekday commuter schedule”.
