Minister urges safety over Cup Match holiday
Motorists and users of the island’s waterways were urged by the transport minister to be safe over the holiday weekend.
Owen Darrell said: “While Cup Match is a cherished and festive occasion, it is also a time when we must be especially mindful of safety on our roads, on the water and in our public spaces.”
His comments came today at the Transport Control Department where the Bermuda Road Safety Council, the Water Safety Council and Cada also urged residents to act responsibly as the national celebration approaches.
Mr Darrell asked drivers and boaters to remain vigilant, drive attentively, obey speed limits and not to use their phones while operating their vehicles and boats.
He also urged residents not to drive or operate vessels while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“The choices we make behind the wheel not just impact ourselves but also impact other road users,” he said.
Mr Darrell added: “Safety on the water is everyone’s responsibility.”
He said: “Together we can make this Cup Match a safe and enjoyable one for everyone.
“Whether you are supporting Somerset or you are supporting St George’s, let us ensure the holiday is remembered for the right reasons.”
Altonio Roberts, the chairman of the Bermuda Road Safety Council, urged motorists to be safe and to be diligent of pedestrians.
He said: “As we approach this memorable, celebratory weekend, it is important that we focus on what matters, that is, the safety of us all.”
Mr Roberts added that the council’s theme for the month of June — “Alert today, alive tomorrow” — reminded everyone that decisions taken on roads and waterways, impact the days ahead.
Maxanne Caines, the chairwoman of the Water Safety Council, reminded boaters of their responsibilities to ensure that their vessels conform with water safety regulations.
Anthony Santucci, Cada’s executive director, said the number of road crashes for the year so far is consistent with the annual numbers of previous years.
He said the organisation, in collaboration with the BRSC and the WSC, had educated individuals about the importance of “making responsible choices”.
