Restaurant manager named as ninth road fatality of the year
A restaurant group shared the heartbreaking loss of a staff member who the police confirmed was Bermuda’s ninth road fatality this year.
Island Restaurant Group posted on social media yesterday afternoon that Joanne McCaul, 53, was an inspiration to the company.
At about 2.35am on Tuesday morning, while the police were at the scene of a two-vehicle collision in Paget that resulted in the death of Stuart Albouy, 60, members of the public alerted officers to another collision that occurred at the junction of South Road and Lover’s Lane in Paget.
“Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive female lying in the westbound lane,” police said.
Ms McCaul, who was riding a rental cycle, was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries which she later succumbed to.
Mr Albouy was the island’s eight road fatality of 2025.
The restaurant firm said ‘Wee Jo’ as Ms McCaul was fondly called, joined the group in 2004 as a server at The Hog Penny Pub “where her dedication and enthusiasm quickly shone through”.
It added: “Over the years, she climbed the ladder into management, leading with kindness, strength and grace.”
Ms McCaul managed several of the company’s eateries and her final position was that of restaurant manager at The Pickled Onion and Brew.
“Her passion, laughter and warmth touched everyone who had the privilege of working with her,” the company said.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends and everyone who loved our Wee Jo. You will for ever be in our hearts.”
Police said an investigation into the collision which resulted in Ms McCaul’s death is ongoing and a family liaison officer had been appointed to assist her family.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any relevant information is asked to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 247-1788 or call 211.
