Workers were pulled from a damaged trash truck this afternoon after the vehicle crashed through a wall and fell down an embankment in Paget.

The Bermuda Police Service said in a statement on social media that at about 1.35pm officers responded to a single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a trash truck in Paget just east of the traffic lights.

The statement said: “Details are limited, but initial information suggests the truck with three people inside was travelling in an easterly direction on South Road, when it appears the driver lost control of the vehicle and went over an embankment on to a grassy area below.

“The driver and two other occupants, all male, had to be extricated with the assistance of Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service personnel.

“After being attended to at the scene by EMTs, the three men were transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries which were described as not serious.

“The vehicle was extensively damaged.”

Westbound motorists were temporarily steered from South Road on to the Railway Trail by White Sands Road, or on to Harbour Road in the wake of the collision.

Police said that as of 4.30pm, the road had reopened to normal traffic, but motorists were urged to exercise extreme caution when approaching the collision site, particularly during the hours of darkness.

A staff member at one of the businesses at the nearby Paget Plaza said that while they did not witness the collision, they heard a loud bang from inside.

The Department of Public Transportation warned that bus services were experiencing delays as a result of the crash.

A government spokeswoman said: “Buses are unable to pass on the inbound or outbound lanes, and the suggested alternative routes are unsafe for buses.

“Consequently, student bus services this afternoon are delayed.

“The DPT, committed to ensuring the safety of all passengers, has contacted schools to advise that once the accident site is cleared, all schoolbuses will proceed to the assigned schools to collect students.”
