Lights back on at Pembroke junction
Traffic lights in Pembroke that went out when a vehicle hit them 17 months ago have been repaired.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works and Environment said that the permanent signals on St John’s Road, opposite the WER Joell Tennis Stadium, returned to service on Wednesday.
The lights went dark after a vehicle hit their control box in July 2024.
The ministry spokesman explained: “The restoration work included the installation of a new traffic signal controller, resolution of programming conflicts and a series of system checks carried out by the highways section and the public lands and buildings, industrial electrical section to ensure safe and reliable operation.
“These repairs follow a prolonged outage after a road traffic accident caused significant damage to the equipment.
“The extended timeline to complete the work was the result of difficulties in sourcing specialised replacement parts from overseas.”
Jaché Adams, the public works and environment minister, added: “I am pleased that the traffic lights on St John’s Road are now operating once again.
“I extend thanks to the highways section within the Department of Works and Engineering, and the industrial electrical section within the Department of Public Lands and Buildings, for the technical work required to install the new controller and bring the system back online.
“I also thank the public for their patience during the period that these lights were out of service.
“This was a complex repair that relied on parts that were not readily available, and I am grateful for the efforts that brought this project to completion.”
The ministry said in May that a new control cabinet — the unit that houses the electronic components which operate the traffic signals — was expected to be shipping from an overseas vendor that month.
At the time, a spokesman said that once the part was received, the ministry would “move quickly” to restore full operation of the lights.
