‘Weight restrictions’ force airline to leave luggage behind
Several bags had to be removed from a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey to the island on Sunday due to weight restrictions, the carrier confirmed.
It came after a passenger complained that she discovered her luggage — which included Christmas presents — did not arrive on the island only when she reached the baggage claim at LF Wade International.
The traveller said in a Facebook post that she counted more than 50 United Airlines passengers at the airport’s lost luggage counter after flight UAL1985 landed after 3.30pm.
The traveller said: “I was not aware that there appears to be a daily problem with United as far as missing luggage.
“I wish they would've told us ahead of time that our luggage was not going to be on the flight.
“Hoping I can get my luggage before Christmas because it's Christmas presents.”
A United Airlines spokeswoman told The Royal Gazette today that luggage left behind on Sunday has arrived in Bermuda. She said the carrier was “working to reunite customers with their luggage”.
Another traveller said she discovered that her bag was missing after she returned to the island on Friday on a United Airlines flight.
She said she logged into United’s app online and tracked her luggage after reporting it as missing.
“I went on the app and tracked it after I reported it, and saw it was never put on the flight and it was four bags checked at the same time, but just one didn't make the flight,” she added.
The luggage arrived on an afternoon flight later that day.
Another United Airline customer suggested that the airline may have left luggage behind for “full” flights.
He said: “If passengers don’t volunteer to take a later flight, the airline decides to leave luggage behind.
“I’ve only experienced this issue with United Airlines.”
On its website, United Airlines said travellers are to report delayed bags within 21 days of arrival for international flights.
The carrier said it automatically refunds bag fees if a bag is delayed more than 15 hours on an international flight of less than 12 hours’ travel time.
