US strikes in Venezuela affect airline’s flights to Bermuda
Several flights operated by BermudAir were cancelled yesterday, one apparently the result of “ripple effects” from US airstrikes on Venezuela.
Flight 2T604 from Toronto, Canada, to LF Wade International was cancelled yesterday owing to the “operational impacts” caused by the US military operation in the South American nation, the airline told one traveller by e-mail.
It came after the United States hit Venezuela with a “large-scale strike” early on Saturday.
The US said Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro and his wife had been captured and flown out of the country after months of pressure by Washington.
The situation on Saturday led to the closure of the airspace near Caribbean flight routes and BermudAir said that it had created a “ripple effect” across its travel network.
On Saturday, flight 2T101, operated by AnguillAir — a subsidiary of BermudAir — left Boston for Anguilla at 12.29pm, according to Flightradar.com.
However, the aircraft, an Embraer 190, was diverted to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Government of Anguilla, in a Facebook notice on Saturday morning, said that all US registered flight operations were significantly disrupted following the issuance of a Notice to Airmen, called a NOTAM.
As a result, all flights operating into The Clayton J Lloyd International Airport in the British Overseas Territory and the surrounding region were impacted.
Yesterday morning, Anguilla’s government said the temporary restriction had been lifted.
“Normal flight operations have resumed and airlines are now authorised to operate as scheduled,” it said.
Yesterday, BermudAir’s flight 2T303 from Boston was also cancelled, according to Skyport’s website.
A traveller who was booked to travel from Boston reported on Facebook that she received an e-mail from the carrier about the cancellation.
Another traveller said she was informed by the airline that the carrier had added a new flight from Boston, which is expected to leave Boston at 11am today.
A traveller from Toronto reported that she had received an e-mail from the airline that stated her flight to the island on Sunday was cancelled. She said she was trying to make attempts to modify her ticket online.
Efforts by The Royal Gazette to obtain information from the airline on the travel disruptions were unsuccessful.
BermudAir launched its inaugural flight between the US East Coast and Anguilla last month.
At the time, Adam Scott, the founder and chief executive of the carrier, said the airline planned to launch a non-stop service to Anguilla from both Newark and Baltimore.
On Saturday, Mr Maduro and his wife, captured overnight from their home, were transported via a US warship to New York, where they are to face criminal charges.
The US is now evaluating next steps for Venezuela and President Donald Trump said: “We’ll be involved in it very much.”
