Taxi drivers’ group to launch reservation app in May
The Bermuda Taxi Owners and Operators Association will launch an app designed to connect the public with vetted drivers, it announced today.
Journi was activated yesterday as an online “mobility platform” designed to help streamline transportation requests, the association said.
A spokesman added that the app, which will launch for the public on May 15, was “wholly owned by BTOA” to ensure business decisions reflected the concerns of taxi drivers.
He said: “This ownership model reinforces alignment with regulated taxi rates, responsible local data management and operational standards shaped by industry professionals.”
Journi was designed to connect taxi drivers, customers and businesses on a taxi operator-owned platform.
Passengers, according to the app’s website, will be able to reserve, pay for and track rides through the app.
It added that drivers are expected to more easily collect customers through direct contact with users and hospitality businesses, who will have their own booking platform.
The BTOA said Journi will offer real-time tracking by dispatchers while keeping rates transparent and level with other taxi operators.
It added that the platform’s performance was still being fine-tuned, while other operations, such as dispatching protocol and compliance procedures, would be completed.
Phase 2 of the roll-out will involve drivers signing up for the platform and getting them vetted, trained on how to work with the service and set professional and performance standards.
The onboarding phase will take place between now and April 15.
Phase 3, which begins at the start of next month, will focus on partnering with corporate, hospitality and event co-ordination businesses.
The association said partners will be instructed on how to use and recommend Journi to their clients as the busy tourism season approaches, while also taking on feedback for better operations.
The BTOA said Journi will launch on May 15 and be preceded by advertisements and public education tactics.
It added: “The BTOA emphasises that Journi is not intended to disrupt Bermuda’s transport ecosystem but to strengthen it through local ownership, regulatory partnership and a commitment to long-term sustainability.
“Licensed taxi operators are encouraged to participate in the onboarding process, while businesses, hospitality providers and event organisers are invited to explore early access opportunities.”
