Lightning likely caused Sandys residents to lose electricity early this morning.

Shelly Leman, Belco managing director, said lightning struck network equipment which likely caused customers in the west end to lose power at about 4.41am.

Ms Leman said: “Belco crews responded immediately and have successfully restored power to the majority of affected customers.”

“However, approximately 136 customers in the Watford Bridge, Malabar Road, Mangrove Bay Road, Loyalty Drive and East Shore Road areas remain without power [shortly after 8.30am].”

Belco urged affected residents to keep sensitive electrical equipment unplugged while crews work to quickly and safely restore power, apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Lightning struck Lindo’s Market in Devonshire, the boat Hunter’s LunaSea in Mill’s Creek and the Bermuda National Trust’s Waterville office in Paget during a storm on August 13.

Additionally, a beachgoer was taken to hospital after being struck by lightning last week.
