Replacement parts needed for weather radar
Replacement parts for the Bermuda Airport Authority’s weather radar are expected to arrive on the island “towards the end of the year”.
A BAA spokeswoman said: “The Bermuda Airport Authority understands and shares the public’s frustration that the weather radar is currently inoperable.
“We request the public’s patience whilst our technical team works with the system vendor in Germany to return this complex system to full service.
“A replacement part has been identified and we await its delivery from Europe towards the end of the year enabling our strategy and next steps to be determined.”
The spokeswoman added that updates on the repairs will be provided and that other products are available on the Bermuda Weather Service website, including detailed forecasts, observations, satellite imagery and estimated rainfall.
The statement came as the public anticipate the approach of Hurricane Melissa, which is forecast to pass close to the island later this week.
The Doppler radar system was commissioned in October 2019 and is about a third of the way through its 15-year life cycle.
However, the system has encountered technical challenges on several occasions, including a month-long outage in October 2024 caused by a technical fault and an outage this year sparked by a separate intermittent fault.
