Wild weather over the weekend stirred up captivating phenomena on both ends of the island.

A cloudburst as thunder brewed to the island’s north generated a striking vortex lasting several minutes in the East End on Saturday morning.

Although on the modest scale of waterspouts, the churning formation that roamed into Ferry Reach in St George’s presented an example of what meteorologists call micro-scale weather.

The Bermuda Weather Service warned of a “summer rumble” as thunderheads built from columns of warm, humid air.

Shortly before 11am, the storm drenched parts of the island while leaving much of the South Shore untouched.

A Ferry Reach resident captured footage of a whirlwind on the water, close to shore, that also took drivers on Kindley Field Road by surprise.

Rumbles persisted throughout the weekend, fuelled by a phenomenon locally known as Morgan’s Cloud.

As warm, steamy air over Bermuda rises, pulling in more humid air from the surroundings, the convection drives it into the atmosphere to create a band of heavy cloud over the island.

In this case, it came with sporadic cloudbursts, thunder — and a lively display of lightning on Saturday night.

On Sunday afternoon, East Shore Road was blocked off to traffic after lightning struck a tree, snapping it in half and leaving its remains in the road.

John Ross, a nearby resident, said he initially thought his house had been struck, only to later find the shattered tree.

“What a noise it was,” Mr Ross added. “I thought it was my house at first, then came out and saw all this.

“It would have to be this tress, though. It is so big — or, it was.”

Police arrived at about 6pm to help process the scene.

According to The Bermuda Flyer, thunderstorms caused “significant delays” for flights in and out of the island.

BermudAir Flight 414 from Montreal spent three hours on the ground after landing before it could park in a gate.

Meanwhile, United Airlines Flight 2392 departed nearly six hours late to Newark, New Jersey.

Air Canada Flight 1818 from Toronto was delayed on its departure over an inbound aircraft’s late arrival, but spent an hour waiting for parking after landing.

British Airways Flight 159 from London was also delayed for nearly two hours after landing while waiting for its gate to become free.

JetBlue Flight 2032 to New York JFK has been delayed until 10.10am today.
