Rainfall for month hits double October average
Bermuda got a soggy October in 2026, delivering twice as much rainfall compared with the month’s average for the island.
The Bermuda Weather Service recorded more than three inches of precipitation on Thursday.
Phil Rogers, the BWS director, described the year so far as “wet”.
“Up to the end of the day, we had received 12.65 inches of rain in October, which included a very wet day on October 7 with 4.58 inches of rain,” he said.
“The normal rainfall expected for October is 6.3 inches, so yes, we are about double the average rainfall for this October.
“For the year we have, so far, received 64.78 inches, where normally we would have expected 48.06 inches up to this point.”
Explaining the contributing weather system, Mr Rogers added: “A persistent trough of low pressure, in a roughly southwest-northeast orientation, has been over our region of the Atlantic for a while now.
“Low pressure areas have been developing along this boundary and moving across the island, bringing the significant periods of rain.
“The warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures have likely contributed to the unusual rainfall.
“The sea surface temperatures have now cooled to nearer normal values.”
As of early Friday afternoon, showers were expected to diminish with sunny periods forecast for Saturday, as low pressure moved on.
