Finding your rhythm
When life gets busy, staying organised and balanced can look different for everyone. For some, it means writing down a to-do list and tackling the hardest task first. For others, it's relying on a calendar, leaning on the people around them or knowing when to step away and reset.
As work, school and everyday routines begin to pick up again, we asked eight people to share the one habit that helps them stay organised, clear-headed and balanced when life gets hectic.
John Lee: For me, my daily habit is to wake up in the morning, I think about what I want to accomplish during the day and I write it down in order of priority. I always try to make sure I put in some personal time so that even when I’m stretched to the fullest, I make sure I put some me time in there. I think it’s important to understand what you want to accomplish, visualise making it happen and then going out and executing it.
Peter McGlashan: One thing that helps me to keep my life organised and balanced is the use of a calendar and the reliance of my wife. She's a lot more organised than myself, so we work well with each other keeping things balanced.
Jelai Carlington: One habit that helps me be organised and balanced is writing things down with due dates and time frames for me to get them done. It helps me because I can actually see it and I can always backtrack. Sometimes when you put things in your head, you just forget about stuff. I think writing it down and seeing it everyday helps me.
Alyssa Perinchief: One thing that helps me stay organised is my village. I would say I have personal assistants within all of them because everyone has their own calendars and they all remind me of what I need to do and when. I would say my village helps me stay organized. I have a million and one tabs open 24/7 in my head and they know I can’t stay on top of all of it without them.
Nathan Frick: So when I like to stay organised, I have a white board in my house, I list all the things I have to do in the day and I always pick the hardest thing first. That way the other stuff feels a lot easier to do. I got that idea from my therapist.
Daniel Johnstone: What helps me keep balanced? I like to go out of my boat. I like to go out on the water. It brings me a sense of peace. It keeps me chilled and balanced and organized when life gets tough. When I’m on the water, it brings that sense of calmness and peace. I’m able to let go of all my thoughts and things that’s happening throughout the day. I’m able to collect myself and be one.
Kaliyah Lee Tucker: I just go on walks. It helps me clear my mind. I just pray and recentre myself and it helps me to refocus and free my mind.
Alana Wolffe: I get up from my desk and I go for a walk. I clear my head. I change my environment. I bump into people, have conversations. Sometimes when the to-do list is too long, you have to take a break and reset and refresh and even take a dance break if there’s a little music going.
