Uniform thinking

Dressing the part: Many students, like these young men, while neatly turned out would prefer a more casual, less uniform look.

Students in many parts of the world wake up early then get dressed in their school uniforms to go to school.Every morning it’s the same thing. Is it time to get rid of uniforms? How do the students of Dellwood Middle School feel about this?“Everyone looks the same. It’s like one big prison. People can’t feel free. Students want to look different.“Most people like to express themselves through what they wear, but with uniforms everyone dresses exactly the same,” are some of the comments made on the subject.“With school uniforms people can’t express themselves. We all have different personalities, and with uniforms we can’t show our personalities in what we wear,” stated Hannah Smith, an M2 student at Dellwood Middle School.Christian Albouy, also an M2 student believes, “We should be creative and spontaneous.” School uniforms prevent this from happening he feels. Many students feel that uniforms look very boring and the colours are very plain. They’re also very uncomfortable.“The tie chokes me and I hate the school uniform!” stated Kyla Scott. At lunch time many students feel uncomfortable when trying to play sports.Uniforms can be quite expensive. Parents have to spend a lot of money each school year on school uniforms and some people can’t afford them. Finally, they are sooooooo unfashionable! Not everyone feels the same way about uniforms. Some see the benefit of wearing school uniforms. Students might dress inappropriately and wear clothes that are too mature for them.Ms Dill, a science teacher at Dellwood Middle School said, “The children talk about what others are wearing. It’s too much pressure. The uniforms are great!”Time in the morning is saved not having to pick out an outfit. A student wouldn’t have to worry about whether they’ve worn that outfit already or whether what they’re wearing matches.Others disagree that uniforms are expensive and believe that people actually save money because they don’t have to buy new clothes all the time.Lailah Fletcher an M2 student believes, “Not everyone has the money to afford to wear different clothes everyday.”Wearing uniforms helps people can identify what school students are from. This is important in case an incident has happened or someone has done something good, they can be recognized by the uniform they’re wearing. Finally there’s theft to consider. Jewellery, purses and other important things might get stolen if they are brought to school. That’s something students don’t have to worry about with uniforms because none of those things are allowed in school. Most students dislike uniforms because of the way they look and how uncomfortable they are. Others think they’re Ok because getting dressed for school doesn’t have to be a challenge.
